JLPT N5-N3 reference
は vs が: topic and focused subjectは と が ・ Wa to ga
Both particles can appear near what English treats as the subject, but they organize information differently: は sets a topic or contrast, while が identifies or presents a subject.
The basic contrast
| Particle | Perspective | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| は (wa) | “As for …” | Established topic, general statement, or contrast |
| が (ga) | “It is … that” / neutral presentation | Focused answer, newly noticed subject, or subject inside a clause |
私は学生です。Watashi wa gakusei desu.As for me, I am a student.
だれが学生ですか。田中さんが学生です。Dare ga gakusei desu ka. Tanaka-san ga gakusei desu.Who is the student? Mr Tanaka is the student.
Question and answer focus
A question word such as だれ normally takes が, and the focused answer keeps が. The unknown item cannot sensibly be treated as an established topic.
何が必要ですか。時間が必要です。Nani ga hitsuyō desu ka. Jikan ga hitsuyō desu. What is necessary? Time is necessary.
Contrast with は
は can replace another particle or combine with it to create contrast. Compare a neutral location with a contrasted location.
東京に住んでいます。大阪には住んでいません。Tōkyō ni sunde imasu. Ōsaka ni wa sunde imasen.I live in Tokyo. I do not live in Osaka (by contrast).
Common patterns with が
- Existence: 猫がいます。
- Ability and preference patterns: 日本語が分かります。音楽が好きです。
- Natural phenomena and perception: 雨が降っています。音が聞こえます。
- Subjects inside relative or subordinate clauses commonly take が.
Common errors
- Do not translate both particles simply as “the subject marker.”
- Do not use は with a question word when the question asks which person or thing is the subject.
- A sentence may contain both: 象は鼻が長い。 “As for elephants, their trunks are long.”
Quick summary
- は establishes or contrasts a topic.
- が identifies, focuses, or neutrally presents a subject.
- Question-word subjects and their answers normally use が.
- The choice changes information structure, not just grammar labels.
