JLPT N5-N3 reference
に vs で: location, target and meansに と で ・ Ni to de
A useful starting contrast is static point or target with に versus the setting or means of an action with で. The verb determines which relationship is needed.
Place: existence vs action
| Particle | Relationship | Example |
|---|---|---|
| に | place where something exists or remains | 机の上に本があります。 There is a book on the desk. |
| で | place where an action happens | 図書館で本を読みます。 I read a book at the library. |
東京に住んでいます。Tōkyō ni sunde imasu.I live in Tokyo.
東京で働いています。Tōkyō de hataraite imasu.I work in Tokyo.
Other roles of に
- Destination: 学校に行きます。
- Specific time: 七時に起きます。
- Recipient or target: 先生に聞きます。
- Result of change: 医者になります。
- Purpose with a movement verb: 買い物に行きます。
Other roles of で
- Means or transport: 電車で行きます。
- Language or tool: 日本語で書きます。
- Material: 木で作ります。
- Group or scope: 三人で食べました。
- Cause in some expressions: 病気で休みました。
Time expressions
Use に with precise clock times and dates. Relative time words such as 今日、明日、毎日 normally take no particle.
月曜日の九時に会いましょう。Getsuyōbi no kuji ni aimashō.Let us meet at nine on Monday.
Common errors
- 学校に勉強します is not the normal choice for “study at school”; use 学校で勉強します.
- Residence uses に, even though “live” feels active in English.
- Do not add に automatically to every time expression.
Quick summary
- に marks a point, target, destination, time, recipient, or place of existence.
- で marks an action setting, means, material, or scope.
- Choose from the relationship required by the verb.
- Relative time words generally appear without に.
