青
blue, green, young
On: セイ (sei) · ショウ (shou) | Kun: あお (ao) · あおい (aoi)
Mnemonic
青 = 生 (life/grow, batch 03) + 井 (well) — plants growing around a water well, lush and blue-green. Japanese 青 (ao) covers both blue and green in traditional usage — traffic lights are officially 青 even though they look green to most eyes. On: セイ (sei) — 青年 (seinen, "youth/young person"), 青春 (seishun, "youth/springtime of life"). Cross-batch: 青竹 (あおだけ, "fresh green bamboo") uses 竹 from this very batch — your first same-batch compound! 青木 (あおき) links to 木 (tree, batch 09). ⚠️ Do not confuse 青 with 清 (clear/pure) — 清 adds the water radical 氵 on the left.
Key vocabulary
- 1青あお (ao)blue, green (colour)
- 2青年せいねん (seinen)youth, young person
- 3青山せいざん (seizan)green mountain; also a place name
- 4青木あおき (aoki)evergreen tree; common surname

村
village
On: ソン (son) | Kun: むら (mura)
Mnemonic
村 = 木 (tree, batch 09) + 寸 (unit of measurement / inch) — trees measured out to mark the boundary of a settlement. Small communities were historically defined by the land they farmed around clusters of trees. On: ソン (son). You've already seen 村 in the administrative chain: 市 (city) → 町 (town, batch 12) → 村 (village). Cross-batch: 山村 (さんそん, sanson, "mountain village") combines 山 (mountain, batch 06) + 村. In famous Japanese surnames: 中村 (Nakamura, "middle-village"), 木村 (Kimura, "tree-village"), 村上 (Murakami, "village-above").
Key vocabulary
- 1村むら (mura)village

夕
evening, dusk
On: セキ (seki) | Kun: ゆう (yuu)
Mnemonic
夕 is a half-moon rising at dusk — the crescent shape of the character evokes the moon just appearing above the horizon at the day's end. Compare it with 月 (moon/month, batch 03): 月 is a full crescent with an inner line, while 夕 is the simpler, earlier stage — the moon barely visible at evening. ⚠️ Also watch out for 多 (many) — it is literally two 夕 stacked, as if many evenings have passed. On: セキ (seki) — rare in everyday speech; ゆう (yuu) dominates. Cross-batch: 石 (this batch) shares the same on-yomi セキ — a homophone pair to memorise together.
Key vocabulary
- 1夕ゆう / ゆうべ / さくや (yuu / yuube / sakuya)evening; last night
- 2夕食ゆうしょく (yuushoku)dinner, evening meal
- 3夕方ゆうがた (yuugata)evening, late afternoon

石
stone, rock
On: セキ (seki) · シャク (shaku) · コク (koku) | Kun: いし (ishi)
Mnemonic
石 shows a cliff or overhang (厂) with a stone (口) fallen beneath it — a rock that has dropped from a cliff face. On: セキ (seki) — 石油 (sekiyu, "petroleum," literally "stone oil"), 化石 (kaseki, "fossil"), 石炭 (sekitan, "coal"). ⚠️ セキ is a triple homophone in this batch: 石 and 夕 both read セキ (seki) — keep them separate by meaning. コク (koku) is an old unit of grain volume (approx. 180 litres). Cross-batch: 石油 ("stone oil") connects to 油田 (yuden, "oil field") from batch 11 — both refer to oil buried in the earth. 石橋 (いしばし, "stone bridge") uses the bridge kanji coming in a later batch.
Key vocabulary
- 1石こく (koku)koku (old unit of volume/grain measure)
- 2石油せきゆ (sekiyu)petroleum, oil
- 3化石かせき (kaseki)fossil
- 4石炭せきたん (sekitan)coal
- 5石橋いしばし / せっきょう (ishibashi / sekkyou)stone bridge

竹
bamboo
On: チク (chiku) | Kun: たけ (take)
Mnemonic
竹 is a clear pictograph of two bamboo stalks with drooping leaves — each half of the character is a stalk with a leaf curling down from a node. It is one of the most iconic radicals: ⺮ (bamboo crown) appears at the top of 笑 (laugh), 筆 (brush), 算 (calculate), 箱 (box), 答 (answer). On: チク (chiku) — 竹林 (chikurin / takebayashi, "bamboo grove"). Cross-batch: 青竹 (あおだけ, "fresh/green bamboo") links this kanji to 青 (blue-green, this batch) — your in-batch pair! ⚠️ 竹刀 (しない, "bamboo sword for kendo") is a famous irregular reading — the ない ending means the blades are bound, not a sword with a name.
Key vocabulary
- 1竹たけ (take)bamboo
- 2爆竹ばくちく (bakuchiku)firecracker
- 3竹林ちくりん / たけばやし (chikurin / takebayashi)bamboo grove/forest
- 4竹刀しない (shinai)bamboo sword (kendo)
- 5青竹あおだけ (aodake)fresh green bamboo
