右
right
On: ウ (u) · ユウ (yuu) | Kun: みぎ (migi)
Mnemonic
右 contains a hand shape (ナ) + mouth (口) — your right hand is traditionally the one you eat and speak with, the dominant hand. On: ウ (u) — short and sharp, like a quick right turn. Learn 右 and 左 together: they share the same upper stroke but differ below — 右 has 口 (mouth), 左 has 工 (work). The compound 左右 (さゆう, sayuu) means "left and right."
Key vocabulary
- 1右みぎ (migi)right (direction)
- 2右翼うよく (uyoku)right wing
- 3左右さゆう (sayuu)left and right
- 4右派うは (uha)right faction / right-wing group
- 5右手みぎて (migite)right hand

左
left
On: サ (sa) · シャ (sha) | Kun: ひだり (hidari)
Mnemonic
左 contains a hand shape (ナ) + work/craft (工) — your left hand assists the right in craftwork and labor. Compare with 右 (right): both start with the same hand stroke at the top, but 左 ends with 工 (craft) while 右 ends with 口 (mouth). On: サ (sa). In the compound 左右 (sayuu), 左 always comes first — just as in English "left and right."
Key vocabulary
- 1左ひだり (hidari)left (direction)
- 2向かって左むかってひだり (mukatte hidari)stage left (facing the audience)
- 3左翼さよく (sayoku)left wing
- 4左右さゆう (sayuu)left and right
- 5左派さは (saha)left faction / left-wing group

休
rest, vacation
On: キュウ (kyuu) | Kun: やす.む (yasumu) · やす.める (yasumeru)
Mnemonic
休 = 人 (person) + 木 (tree) — a person leaning against a tree to rest. This is one of the most satisfying pictographic kanji: the person radical (亻) leans into 木 (which you learned last batch!). On: キュウ (kyuu) — as in 夏休み (natsuyasumi, "summer vacation") and 休日 (kyuujitsu, "holiday"). Remember: whenever you see a person next to a tree, they're taking a break.
Key vocabulary

立
stand, establish
On: リツ (ritsu) · リュウ (ryuu) | Kun: た.つ (tatsu) · た.てる (tateru)
Mnemonic
立 shows a person (大) standing upright on the ground (一) — the bottom horizontal stroke is the ground, and the figure above is standing tall on it. On: リツ (ritsu). As a meaning, 立 extends beyond physical standing to "establish" — 国立 (kokuritsu) means "nationally established." Notice: 立場 (tachiba) — literally "standing place" — means "standpoint" or "position."
Key vocabulary
- 1立場たちば (tachiba)standpoint, position

On: シュ (shu) · ズ (zu) | Kun: て (te) · た- (ta-)

The compound 選手 (senshu) means "athlete" — literally chosen hand. 相手 (aite) means "partner/opponent" — literally mutual hand. The voiced reading ズ (zu) is rare but appears in 水手 (suifu, "sailor") in older vocabulary.
