女
woman
On: ジョ (jo) · ニョ (nyo) · ニョウ (nyou) | Kun: おんな (onna) · め (me)
Mnemonic
Picture a woman kneeling gracefully with arms crossed in her lap — that flowing three-stroke shape is exactly 女. The crossed arms recall the elegance of a seated figure. On-yomi ジョ (jo) appears in words like 女性 (josei) — "female" — and the kun-yomi おんな (onna) is the everyday word for "woman."
Key vocabulary
- 1女おんな (onna)woman

百
hundred
On: ヒャク (hyaku) · ビャク (byaku) | Kun: もも (momo)
Mnemonic
百 contains 白 (white) with one extra stroke on top — think of it as "one step beyond white/pure," reaching one hundred. The on-yomi ヒャク (hyaku) sounds like "hack" — imagine a lumberjack who has made one hundred hacks with his axe. Note that 三百 becomes さんびゃく (sanbyaku) — the h softens to b after さん.
Key vocabulary
- 1百ひゃく (hyaku)one hundred
- 2二百にひゃく (nihyaku)two hundred
- 3三百さんびゃく (sanbyaku)three hundred

On: セン (sen) | Kun: さき (saki) · まず (mazu)
Mnemonic
先 shows 土 (earth/ground) + 儿 (walking legs) — someone walking out ahead on the ground, always one step in front. The most essential compound is 先生 (sensei) — "teacher" — because your teacher was there 先に (saki ni), first, before you arrived. On: セン (sen).

名
name, fame
On: メイ (mei) · ミョウ (myou) | Kun: な (na)
Mnemonic
名 = 夕 (evening/dusk) + 口 (mouth) — in the darkness of evening you can't see someone's face, so you call out their name with your mouth. On-yomi メイ (mei) appears in 名前 (namae) — "name" — and 有名 (yuumei) — "famous." Kun: な (na), as in お名前 (onamae, "your name").

川
river
On: セン (sen) | Kun: かわ (kawa) · がわ (gawa)
Mnemonic
川 is a pure pictograph — three vertical lines represent water flowing between two banks, exactly like looking down at a river from above. The outer lines are the banks; the middle line is the current. On: セン (sen); kun: かわ (kawa), which becomes がわ (gawa) in compounds like 江戸川 (Edogawa).
