Why Counters Have Sound Changes (p / b / h alternation)

Japanese counters change pronunciation depending on the number before them. The three main triggers are:

  โ€ข ใ•ใ‚“ before ๏ฝžใปใ‚“ โ†’ ใ•ใ‚“ใผใ‚“ (voiced b)

This is called rendaku or gemination โ€” a natural phonetic shift. Memorise by category, not by rule.
ใ„ใก ๏ผ‹ ใปใ‚“ โ†’ ใ„ใฃใฝใ‚“
ichi + hon โ†’ ippon
→ The final consonant of ใ„ใก geminates to double the initial consonant of ใปใ‚“.
ใˆใ‚“ใดใคใŒ ใ„ใฃใฝใ‚“ ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚
Enpitsu ga ippon arimasu.
There is one pencil.

Question Forms for Counters

Each counter has a "how many?" question word:

  โ€ข ใชใ‚“ใซใ‚“ โ€” how many people?
โ€ข ใชใ‚“ใผใ‚“ โ€” how many long thin things?
  โ€ข ใชใ‚“ใพใ„ โ€” how many flat things?
  โ€ข ใชใ‚“ใ•ใค โ€” how many books?
  โ€ข ใชใ‚“ใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ โ€” how many hours?
  โ€ข ใชใ‚“ใทใ‚“ โ€” how many minutes?
  โ€ข ใ„ใใค โ€” how many? (for ๏ฝžใค general counter)
[NOUN] ใŒ ใชใ‚“๏ผ‹[counter] ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ‹
[noun] ga nan+[counter] arimasu ka
→ "How many [noun] are there?"
ใŒใใ›ใ„ใŒ ใชใ‚“ใซใ‚“ ใ„ใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚
Gakusei ga nannin imasu ka.
How many students are there?

Duration + ใง โ€” "In/Within X Hours"

To express completing something within a duration, attach ใง to the counter.

โ€ข ใซใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ใง = "in two hours" (completed within that time)
โ€ข This is different from ใซใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ alone, which is simply a duration quantity.
โ€ข ใง here marks the scope/limit of time, not location.
[duration] ใง [verb โ€” completion]
[duration] de [verb]
→ "To do [verb] within [duration]."
ใซใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ใง ใŠใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ—ใŸใ€‚
Nijikan de owarimashita.
It finished in two hours.

๏ฝžใ”ใ‚ โ€” Approximate Clock Time

ใ”ใ‚ attaches to a specific time to make it approximate ("around", "about").

โ€ข Used only with clock times and dates โ€” not with relative words like ใใ‚‡ใ† or ใ‚ใ—ใŸ.
โ€ข ใ”ใ‚ replaces ใซ when approximation is needed (you do not use both ใซ and ใ”ใ‚ together).
[clock/date time] ใ”ใ‚ [verb]
[time] goro [verb]
→ "Around [time], [verb]."
ใ•ใ‚“ใ˜ใ”ใ‚ ใ‹ใˆใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚
Sanji goro kaerimasu.
I'll go home around 3 o'clock.

๏ฝžใใ‚‰ใ„ / ๏ฝžใใ‚‰ใ„ โ€” Approximate Amount or Duration

ใใ‚‰ใ„ (or ใใ‚‰ใ„ โ€” same meaning, interchangeable) attaches to amounts and durations to mean "about" or "approximately".

โ€ข Unlike ใ”ใ‚, ใใ‚‰ใ„ is used for quantities and durations, not specific points in time.
โ€ข It can combine with counters: ใซใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ใใ‚‰ใ„ = "about two hours".
โ€ข Commonly heard in casual and polite speech alike.
[number + counter] ใใ‚‰ใ„ [verb]
[amount] gurai [verb]
→ "About [amount], [verb]."
ใ•ใ‚“ใ˜ใ‹ใ‚“ใใ‚‰ใ„ ใพใกใพใ—ใŸใ€‚
Sanjikan gurai machimashita.
I waited for about three hours.
