โ COMMON MISTAKE
ใชใซใ ใในใพใใใ
Nani mo tabemashita.
(Intended: I didn't eat anything)
ใ must pair with a negative โ affirmative gives unnatural meaning

D โ Listen & Write in Romaji

๐ก Tip: Long vowels โ double the vowel (ใใ = ou / oo). Double consonants โ write them twice (ใใฃใฆ = kitte).
ใชใซ vs ใชใ โ the distribution rule
Both mean "what" but the choice depends on what follows:
โข ใชใ is used before ใงใ, ใง, ใฎ, and counters (ใชใใซใ, ใชใใ, ใชใใใ). The n-sound blends more naturally with following d/n sounds.
โข ใชใซ is the default form before particles like ใ, ใ, ใ, and most other particles (ใชใซใ, ใชใซใ, ใชใซใ).
โข In casual speech, ใชใซ is sometimes used more broadly, but following the rule above will always be correct.
ใชใ
+ ใงใ / ใง / ใฎ / counter
ใชใซ
+ ใ / ใ / ใ / other particles
→ ใชใใงใใ (what is it?) ยท ใชใซใใใพใใ (what will you do?)
ใใใใจใฏ ใชใใงใใใ
Oshigoto wa nan desu ka.
What is your job?
Japanese questions don't change word order
In English, questions require inverted word order ("Are you a student?" vs "You are a student."). Japanese does not do this.
โข Simply place the question word where the unknown information goes and add ใ at the end.
โข This means the sentence structure is identical to a statement โ only ใ (or a rising tone in casual speech) marks it as a question.
โข This makes Japanese questions much easier to construct once you know the question words.
Statement:
ใใใฏ ใใใใงใใ
Question:
ใใใฏ ใชใใงใใใ
→ Replace the unknown with the question word โ no inversion needed
ใใใใใใณใฏ ใใคใงใใใ
Tanjoubi wa itsu desu ka.
When is your birthday? (same structure as "birthday is [date]")
The politeness ladder for "why": ใชใ โ ใฉใใใฆ โ ใชใใง
All three words mean "why" but carry different registers:
โข ใชใ โ formal/written. Used in news, business, academic writing.
โข ใฉใใใฆ โ neutral/standard. Safe to use in most everyday conversations.
โข ใชใใง โ casual/colloquial. Common among friends. Can sound blunt in formal settings.
โข When in doubt, ใฉใใใฆ is the safest choice for spoken Japanese.
ใชใ ใซใปใใใ ในใใใใใใพใใใ๏ผใใฉใผใใซ๏ผ
Naze nihongo wo benkyou shimasu ka. (formal)
Why do you study Japanese?
ใฉใ as a conversation starter โ ๏ฝใฏใฉใใงใใ
ใฉใ (how) is one of the most useful conversational tools in Japanese:
โข [Topic] ใฏ ใฉใใงใใ asks for someone's opinion, impression, or reaction.
โข It can start a conversation ("How about Japanese food?") or follow up ("How was it?").
โข Compare: ใฉใใช ใใใใใ ใใใงใใ (what kind of food?) โ asks for a category. ใซใปใใใใใใฏ ใฉใใงใใ (how about Japanese food?) โ asks for an opinion.
[Topic]
ใฏ ใฉใใงใใ

ใใกใใฏ ใฉใใงใใใ
