ใชใซ vs ใชใ‚“ โ€” the distribution rule

Both mean "what" but the choice depends on what follows:   โ€ข ใชใ‚“ is used before ใงใ™, ใง, ใฎ, and counters (ใชใ‚“ใซใ‚“, ใชใ‚“ใ˜, ใชใ‚“ใ•ใ„). The n-sound blends more naturally with following d/n sounds.   โ€ข ใชใซ is the default form before particles like ใ‚’, ใŒ, ใ‚‚, and most other particles (ใชใซใ‚’, ใชใซใŒ, ใชใซใ‚‚).   โ€ข In casual speech, ใชใซ is sometimes used more broadly, but following the rule above will always be correct.
ใชใ‚“ + ใงใ™ / ใง / ใฎ / counter
ใชใซ + ใ‚’ / ใŒ / ใ‚‚ / other particles
→ ใชใ‚“ใงใ™ใ‹ (what is it?) ยท ใชใซใ‚’ใ—ใพใ™ใ‹ (what will you do?)
ใŠใ—ใ”ใจใฏ ใชใ‚“ใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚
Oshigoto wa nan desu ka.
What is your job?

Japanese questions don't change word order

In English, questions require inverted word order ("Are you a student?" vs "You are a student."). Japanese does not do this.   โ€ข Simply place the question word where the unknown information goes and add ใ‹ at the end.   โ€ข This means the sentence structure is identical to a statement โ€” only ใ‹ (or a rising tone in casual speech) marks it as a question.   โ€ข This makes Japanese questions much easier to construct once you know the question words.
Statement: ใ“ใ‚Œใฏ ใ‚Šใ‚“ใ”ใงใ™ใ€‚
Question: ใ“ใ‚Œใฏ ใชใ‚“ใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚
→ Replace the unknown with the question word โ€” no inversion needed
ใŸใ‚“ใ˜ใ‚‡ใ†ใณใฏ ใ„ใคใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚
Tanjoubi wa itsu desu ka.
When is your birthday? (same structure as "birthday is [date]")

The politeness ladder for "why": ใชใœ โ†’ ใฉใ†ใ—ใฆ โ†’ ใชใ‚“ใง

All three words mean "why" but carry different registers:   โ€ข ใชใœ โ€” formal/written. Used in news, business, academic writing.   โ€ข ใฉใ†ใ—ใฆ โ€” neutral/standard. Safe to use in most everyday conversations.   โ€ข ใชใ‚“ใง โ€” casual/colloquial. Common among friends. Can sound blunt in formal settings.   โ€ข When in doubt, ใฉใ†ใ—ใฆ is the safest choice for spoken Japanese.
ใชใœ ใซใปใ‚“ใ”ใ‚’ ในใ‚“ใใ‚‡ใ†ใ—ใพใ™ใ‹ใ€‚๏ผˆใƒ•ใ‚ฉใƒผใƒžใƒซ๏ผ‰
Naze nihongo wo benkyou shimasu ka. (formal)
Why do you study Japanese?

ใฉใ† as a conversation starter โ€” ๏ฝžใฏใฉใ†ใงใ™ใ‹

ใฉใ† (how) is one of the most useful conversational tools in Japanese:   โ€ข [Topic] ใฏ ใฉใ†ใงใ™ใ‹ asks for someone's opinion, impression, or reaction.   โ€ข It can start a conversation ("How about Japanese food?") or follow up ("How was it?").   โ€ข Compare: ใฉใ‚“ใช ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ‚ŠใŒ ใ™ใใงใ™ใ‹ (what kind of food?) โ†’ asks for a category. ใซใปใ‚“ใ‚Šใ‚‡ใ†ใ‚Šใฏ ใฉใ†ใงใ™ใ‹ (how about Japanese food?) โ†’ asks for an opinion.
[Topic] ใฏ ใฉใ†ใงใ™ใ‹
[topic] wa dou desu ka
→ "How about [topic]?" / "What do you think of [topic]?"
ใŠใกใ‚ƒใฏ ใฉใ†ใงใ™ใ‹ใ€‚
