Adjective negatives and past
Japanese adjectives distinguish non-past and past as well as affirmative and negative. い-adjectives inflect themselves; な-adjectives use copula forms.
Core meaning and form
For い-adjectives, replace final い with くない, かった, or くなかった. The adjective いい has irregular forms based on よい: よくない and よかった.
- 高い → 高くない → 高かった → 高くなかった.
- 静かだ → 静かではない → 静かだった → 静かではなかった.
- いい → よくない / よかった.
Examples in context
昨日は暑かったです。Kinō wa atsukatta desu.It was hot yesterday.
試験は難しくなかったです。Shiken wa muzukashikunakatta desu. The exam was not difficult.
ホテルは静かではありませんでした。Hoteru wa shizuka dewa arimasen deshita. The hotel was not quiet.
Common errors
- Do not add でした directly after an い-adjective past form.
- Remember that いい changes through the stem よ-.
Quick summary
- Predicate type determines the endings.
- い-adjectives inflect directly.
- な-adjectives follow noun-copula patterns.
