FORMAL

→ "Happy birthday." (polite, family/acquaintances)

SLANG

Asking / stating age — ～さいになりました

STANDARD

[NUMBER] さいになりました。

[number] -sai ni narimashita.

→ "I turned [N] years old."

Giving and receiving — あげます / もらいます / くれます

もらう = I receive. くれる = someone gives to me (grateful nuance).

Thanking for an action — ～てくれてありがとう

CASUAL

[VERB-て] くれてありがとう！

[verb-te] kurete arigatou!

→ "Thanks for [verb-ing]!" — casual gratitude for someone's action

FORMAL

[VERB-て] いただきありがとうございます。

[verb-te] itadaki arigatou gozaimasu.

→ "Thank you for [verb-ing]." — formal gratitude

おめでとう(ございます) — Congratulations

おめでとう (omedetou) = "congratulations / happy ~". Add ございます for formal.

  • おたんじょうびおめでとうございます = happy birthday (formal)
  • たんじょうびおめでとう = happy birthday (standard)
  • あけましておめでとうございます = happy new year (formal)

The お prefix on たんじょうび is honorific — use it with ございます for the full formal form.

[EVENT] おめでとう(ございます)。

[event] omedetou (gozaimasu).

→ "Happy [event]." / "Congratulations on [event]."

～になりました — "Became / Turned"

になりました (ni narimashita) = "became / turned [something]". Used for age, status, season, etc.

• にじゅうごさいになりました = I turned 25
• はるになりました = It became spring

Question form: なんさいになりましたか？ = "How old did you turn?"

[NUMBER] さいになりました。

[number] -sai ni narimashita.

→ "I turned [N] years old."

にじゅうごさいになりました。

Nijuugo-sai ni narimashita.

I turned 25 years old.

～をあげます / もらいます / くれます — Giving & Receiving

Three verbs for gift exchange — direction matters:

  • あげます (agemasu) = I/someone gives (away from speaker)
  • もらいます (moraimasu) = I/someone receives
  • くれます (kuremasu) = someone gives to me/my group (grateful feeling)

All use を for the object: プレゼントをあげます = "I give a present."

[PERSON] に [THING] をあげます。

[person] ni [thing] wo agemasu.

→ "I give [thing] to [person]."

ともだちにプレゼントをあげました。

Tomodachi ni purezento wo agemashita.

I gave a present to my friend.

～てくれてありがとう — "Thanks for doing ~"

て-form + くれて + ありがとう = "thanks for [doing something for me]".

• きてくれてありがとう = thanks for coming
• つくってくれてありがとう = thanks for making (it)

Formal: ～ていただきありがとうございます。

[VERB-て] くれてありがとう。

[verb-te] kurete arigatou.

→ "Thanks for [verb-ing]."

きてくれてありがとう！

Kite kurete arigatou!

Thanks for coming!

～ましょう — "Let's ~"

ます-stem + ましょう = "let's do ~". Used for suggestions and invitations.

  • たべましょう = let's eat
  • きりましょう = let's cut
  • はじめましょう = let's begin

Casual equivalent: plain form + よう (たべよう, きろう).

[VERB-ます stem] ましょう。

[verb stem] mashou.

→ "Let's [verb]."

ケーキをきりましょう。

Keeki wo kirimashou.

Let's cut the cake.

～ように — "So that ~ / I hope ~"

Plain form + ように (you ni) expresses a wish or hope, often used in blessings.

• すてきないちねんになりますように = may it be a wonderful year
• げんきでいられますように = may you stay healthy

This pattern is common in birthday wishes and New Year greetings.

[WISH / HOPE] ように。

[wish] you ni.

→ "I hope / May [wish come true]."

すてきないちねんになりますように。

Suteki na ichinen ni narimasu you ni.

May it be a wonderful year.
