Asking what's wrong — どうしましたか

FORMAL

STANDARD

→ "What's the matter?" (polite — most common at clinics)

Explaining symptoms — ～がいたいです / ～があります

STANDARD

[BODY PART] がいたいです。

[body part] ga itai desu.

→ "My [body part] hurts."

STANDARD

[SYMPTOM] があります。

[symptom] ga arimasu.

→ "I have [symptom]." — for fever, cough, etc.

Since when — ～にちまえから / ～からつづいています

🟢 STANDARD — Short answer

みっかまえからです。

Mikka mae kara desu.

Since three days ago.

～まえから = "since [time] ago". Simple, direct reply.

🟢 STANDARD — Full sentence

みっかまえからつづいています。

Mikka mae kara tsuzuite imasu.

It has been continuing since three days ago.

～からつづいています = "has been continuing since ~".

Dosage instructions — いちにち～かい

STANDARD

いちにち [NUMBER] かい [TIMING] にのんでください。

ichinichi [number] kai [timing] ni nonde kudasai.

→ "Please take it [N] times a day [before/after meals]."

Asking permission — ～てもいいですか

🟢 STANDARD — Asking

おふろにはいってもいいですか？

Ofuro ni haitte mo ii desu ka?

Is it OK to take a bath?

～てもいいですか = "May I ~?" / "Is it OK to ~?"

🟢 STANDARD — Refusing

～ないでください。

~naide kudasai.

～ないでください = polite negative instruction.

どうしましたか — "What's the matter?"

The standard opening question a doctor uses. どう (how) + しました (did) + か (question marker).

  • Used by doctors, nurses, and reception staff
  • The patient answers with their symptoms
  • Keigo version: どうなさいましたか

どうしましたか？

Dou shimashita ka?

→ "What seems to be the problem?"

どうしましたか？ — あたまがいたいです。

Dou shimashita ka? — Atama ga itai desu.

What's the matter? — I have a headache.

～からつづいています — "Has been continuing since ~"

から (from/since) + つづいています (is continuing). Used to tell the doctor how long a symptom has lasted.

• きのうからつづいています = has been continuing since yesterday
• せんしゅうからつづいています = has been continuing since last week

[TIME] からつづいています。

[time] kara tsuzuite imasu.

→ "It has been continuing since [time]."

みっかまえからつづいています。

Mikka mae kara tsuzuite imasu.

It has been continuing since three days ago.

～にちまえから — "Since ~ days ago"

にち (day counter) + まえ (before/ago) + から (since). Tells the doctor when something started.

  • ふつかまえから = since 2 days ago
  • みっかまえから = since 3 days ago
  • いっしゅうかんまえから = since a week ago

→ "Since [N] days ago"

みっかまえからあたまがいたいです。

～かい — Counter for frequency (times)

かい (kai) counts how many times something happens. Combined with いちにち (one day) for daily dosage.

  • いっかい = 1 time
  • にかい = 2 times
  • さんかい = 3 times
  • なんかい = how many times?

いちにち [NUMBER] かい

ichinichi [number] kai

→ "[N] times a day"

いちにちさんかいのんでください。

Ichinichi sankai nonde kudasai.

Please take it three times a day.

しょくぜん / しょくご — Before / after meals

Two key words for medicine timing:

• しょくぜん (shokuzen) = before meals
• しょくご (shokugo) = after meals

Pharmacists always specify one of these when giving dosage instructions.

[しょくぜん / しょくご] にのんでください。

[shokuzen / shokugo] ni nonde kudasai.

→ "Please take it [before/after] meals."

しょくごにのんでください。

Shokugo ni nonde kudasai.

Please take it after meals.

～てもいいですか — "May I ~ ?" / "Is it OK to ~ ?"

て-form + も + いいですか = asking for permission. Very common at the doctor or pharmacy.

  • はいってもいいですか = Is it OK to enter / take a bath?
  • たべてもいいですか = Is it OK to eat?
  • うんどうしてもいいですか = Is it OK to exercise?

[VERB-て] もいいですか？

[verb-te] mo ii desu ka?

→ "Is it OK to [verb]?"

おふろにはいってもいいですか？

Ofuro ni haitte mo ii desu ka?

Is it OK to take a bath?

～ないでください — "Please don't ~"

ない-form + で + ください = polite negative instruction. Doctors use this to give restrictions.

  • はいらないでください = please don't enter / bathe
  • たべないでください = please don't eat
  • うんどうしないでください = please don't exercise

[VERB-ない] でください。

[verb-nai] de kudasai.

→ "Please don't [verb]."

ながいおふろにはいらないでください。

Nagai ofuro ni hairanaide kudasai.

Please don't take long baths.
