Describing today's weather — きょうは～です

STANDARD

きょうは [WEATHER] ですね。

"It's [weather] today, isn't it?" (polite)

CASUAL

きょう [WEATHER] ね。

"It's [weather] today." — drop は and です among friends.

Forecasts — ～でしょう vs ～かも

🟢 STANDARD

あしたはあめでしょう。

Ashita wa ame deshou.

It will probably rain tomorrow.

～でしょう = "probably" — soft, polite prediction based on forecast.

🟡 CASUAL

あしたあめかも。

Ashita ame kamo.

It might rain tomorrow.

～かも = short for かもしれない — "maybe / might" among friends.

Giving advice — ～たほうがいいです

STANDARD

[VERB-た] ほうがいいです。

[verb-ta] hou ga ii desu.

"You'd better [verb]." (polite advice)

CASUAL

[VERB-た] ほうがいいよ。

[verb-ta] hou ga ii yo.

"You should [verb]." — friendly advice.

"Too ~" — ～すぎる / Becoming ~ — ～くなる

～すぎる (too much)

あつすぎます。

Atsusugi masu.

It's too hot.

い-adj stem + すぎる = "too ~". あつい → あつ + すぎる.

～くなる (becoming)

すずしくなります。

Suzushiku narimasu.

It's getting cool.

い-adj stem + く + なる = "become ~". すずしい → すずしく + なる.

てんき vocabulary — Weather words

Japanese weather words fall into two groups: nouns and い-adjectives.

• Nouns: はれ (sunny), くもり (cloudy), あめ (rain), ゆき (snow), かぜ (wind)
• い-adjectives: あつい (hot), さむい (cold), あたたかい (warm), すずしい (cool), むしあつい (humid/muggy)

Nouns use ～です: きょうはあめです。 Adjectives also use ～です: きょうはあついです。

きょうは [WEATHER NOUN] です。

kyou wa [weather] desu.

"Today is [sunny / cloudy / rainy]."

きょうはくもりです。

Kyou wa kumori desu.

Today is cloudy.

～でしょう — Forecasts and soft predictions

でしょう (deshou) follows a noun or plain-form adjective to mean "probably" or "it seems like". Often used for weather forecasts and polite guesses.

• あめでしょう = it will probably rain
• さむいでしょう = it will probably be cold

Casual equivalent: ～だろう (darou).

あしたは [WEATHER] でしょう。

ashita wa [weather] deshou.

"Tomorrow will probably be [weather]."

あしたははれでしょう。

Ashita wa hare deshou.

Tomorrow will probably be sunny.

～かもしれません — "It might ~"

かもしれません (kamoshiremasen) attaches to plain forms and means "might" or "maybe". Less certain than でしょう.

• かぜがつよいかもしれません = the wind might be strong
• あめかもしれません = it might rain

Casual: かもしれない or just かも.

[PLAIN FORM] かもしれません。

[plain form] kamoshiremasen.

"It might [be ~]." — expressing possibility

かぜがつよいかもしれません。

Kaze ga tsuyoi kamoshiremasen.

The wind might be strong.

～たほうがいいです — "You'd better ~"

た-form of a verb + ほうがいい (hou ga ii) = "it's better to ~" / "you should ~". Used for giving advice.

• もっていった + ほうがいい = you'd better take (it)
• きた + ほうがいい = you'd better wear (it)

Add です for polite tone. Casual: drop です.

[VERB-た] ほうがいいです。

[verb-ta] hou ga ii desu.

"You'd better [verb]." — polite advice

かさをもっていったほうがいいですね。

Kasa wo motte itta hou ga ii desu ne.

We'd better take an umbrella, right?

～すぎます — "Too ~"

い-adjective stem + すぎる (sugiru) = "too ~". Conjugates as a る-verb.

• あつい → あつ + すぎる = あつすぎる (too hot)
• さむい → さむ + すぎる = さむすぎる (too cold)

Polite: あつすぎます. Casual: あつすぎる / あつすぎ.

[ADJ-stem] すぎます。

[adj-stem] sugimasu.

"It's too [adjective]."

きょうはあつすぎます。

Kyou wa atsusugi masu.

Today is too hot.

～くなります — "It becomes ~"

い-adjective stem + く + なる (naru) = "become ~". Describes a change of state.

  • すずしい → すずしく + なる = すずしくなる (become cool)
  • さむい → さむく + なる = さむくなる (become cold)
  • あたたかい → あたたかく + なる = あたたかくなる (become warm)

Polite: なります. Casual: なる / なるよ.

[ADJ-stem] くなります。

[adj-stem] ku narimasu.

"It becomes [adjective]." / "It's getting [adjective]."

よるはすずしくなります。

Yoru wa suzushiku narimasu.

It gets cool in the evening.

～そうです — "I heard that ~" / "It looks like ~"

Two uses of そうです:

• Hearsay (plain form + そうです): くもりになるそうです = "I heard it will become cloudy"
• Appearance (verb-stem / adj-stem + そう): あめがふりそう = "It looks like it will rain"

Hearsay reports information from another source. Appearance describes what you observe or sense.

[PLAIN FORM] そうです。

[plain form] sou desu.

"I heard that [~]." — reporting what someone said or a forecast

ごごからくもりになるそうです。

Gogo kara kumori ni naru sou desu.

I heard it will become cloudy from the afternoon.
