Asking where a place is — ～はどこですか

FORMAL

CASUAL

Describing location — ～のちかく / となり / まえ

🟢 STANDARD

えきのちかくにあります。

Eki no chikaku ni arimasu.

It's near the station.

ちかく = near, となり = next to, まえ = in front of. Pattern: [LANDMARK] の [POSITION] にあります。

🟡 CASUAL

えきのちかくだよ。

Eki no chikaku da yo.

It's near the station.

Replace あります with だよ for casual tone.

Asking if a place exists nearby — ～がありますか

STANDARD

ちかくに [PLACE] はありますか？

chikaku ni [place] wa arimasu ka?

"Is there a [place] nearby?"

CASUAL

このへんに [PLACE] ある？

kono hen ni [place] aru?

"Is there a [place] around here?"

Ko-so-a demonstratives — ここ / そこ / あそこ

koko / soko / asoko

here / there / over there

ここ = near me, そこ = near you, あそこ = far from both of us.

～はどこですか — Asking where something is

The most common way to ask for a location. Place the thing you are looking for before は, then add どこですか (where is it?).

  • Formal: ～はどこにございますか？
  • Standard: ～はどこですか？
  • Casual: ～どこ？

[PLACE] はどこですか？

[place] wa doko desu ka?

"Where is [place]?"

びょういんはどこですか？

Byouin wa doko desu ka?

Where is the hospital?

ここ / そこ / あそこ — Ko-so-a location words

Japanese uses three distance levels to point to places:

  • ここ (koko) = here (near the speaker)
  • そこ (soko) = there (near the listener)
  • あそこ (asoko) = over there (far from both)

These replace specific place names when pointing or when context is clear.

[ここ / そこ / あそこ] にあります。

[koko / soko / asoko] ni arimasu.

"It's [here / there / over there]."

コンビニあそこだよね。

Konbini asoko da yo ne.

The convenience store is over there, right?

～のちかく / となり / まえ — Relative position

To describe where something is relative to a landmark, use の + a position word:

  • ちかく (chikaku) = near / nearby
  • となり (tonari) = next to / beside
  • まえ (mae) = in front of
  • うしろ (ushiro) = behind

Pattern: [LANDMARK] の [POSITION] にあります。

[LANDMARK] の [POSITION] にあります。

[landmark] no [position] ni arimasu.

"It's [near / next to / in front of] [landmark]."

としょかんのとなりにあります。

Toshokan no tonari ni arimasu.

It's next to the library.

～にいきます — Going to a place

に marks the destination with movement verbs like いきます (go), きます (come), かえります (return).

  • Standard: ～にいきます
  • Casual: ～にいく / ～いく (particle often dropped)
  • Volitional: ～にいこう = "let's go to ~"

[PLACE] にいきます。

[place] ni ikimasu.

"I go to [place]." / "I'm going to [place]."

ぎんこうにいきます。

Ginkou ni ikimasu.

I'm going to the bank.

～まであるいて～ふんです — Walking time

まで (made) = "up to / until" marks the endpoint. Combined with あるいて (walking) and a time, it expresses walking distance.

• ここからあるいてごふんです = "It's a 5-minute walk from here"
• あるいてじゅっぷんぐらいです = "It's about a 10-minute walk"

ここからあるいて [NUMBER] ふんです。

koko kara aruite [number] fun desu.

"It's a [N]-minute walk from here."

ここからあるいてごふんです。

Koko kara aruite go-fun desu.

It's a 5-minute walk from here.

～がありますか — Asking if something exists

あります (arimasu) is used for the existence of non-living things (buildings, shops, etc.). が marks the subject.

• ちかくにスーパーはありますか？ = "Is there a supermarket nearby?"
• は replaces が when the item is the topic of conversation (contrast/emphasis)

ちかくに [PLACE] はありますか？

chikaku ni [place] wa arimasu ka?

"Is there a [place] nearby?"

ちかくにスーパーはありますか？

Chikaku ni suupaa wa arimasu ka?

Is there a supermarket nearby?

～をさがしています — "I'm looking for ~"

さがす (sagasu) = to look for / to search. The ている form shows an ongoing action.

  • Standard: ～をさがしています
  • Formal: ～をさがしているのですが (trails off politely)
  • Casual: ～さがしてる

[PLACE] をさがしています。

[place] wo sagashite imasu.

"I'm looking for [place]."

ゆうびんきょくをさがしているのですが。

Yuubinkyoku wo sagashite iru no desu ga.

I'm looking for the post office (polite, trailing off).
