Saying where you live — ～にすんでいます

STANDARD

[PLACE] にすんでいます。

[place] ni sunde imasu.

→ "I live in [place]." — polite ongoing state

CASUAL

[PLACE] にすんでる。

[place] ni sunderu.

→ "I live in [place]." — casual contraction of すんでいる

Distance from station — えきから～ふん

🟢 STANDARD

えきからじゅっぷんです。

Eki kara juppun desu.

It's 10 minutes from the station.

えきから + [number]ふん/ぷん + です。 The から marks the starting point.

🟡 CASUAL

えきからちかいよ。

Eki kara chikai yo.

It's close to the station.

Often just say ちかい (close) or とおい (far) instead of exact minutes.

Describing with two adjectives — ～くて / ～で

い-adjective

ひろくてきれいだよ。

Hirokute kirei da yo.

It's spacious and clean.

Drop い → add くて to connect. ひろい → ひろくて

な-adjective

しずかでべんりです。

Shizuka de benri desu.

It's quiet and convenient.

な-adj + で to connect. しずかな → しずかで

What's nearby — ～のちかくに～があります

STANDARD

[PLACE] のちかくに [THING] があります。

[place] no chikaku ni [thing] ga arimasu.

→ "There is [thing] near [place]."

CASUAL

～にすんでいます — Living somewhere (ongoing state)

すんでいます (sunde imasu) is the て-form of すむ (sumu = to live) + います, expressing an ongoing state — "I am living in ~".

  • The particle に marks the location where you reside
  • STANDARD: すんでいます (sunde imasu)
  • CASUAL: すんでる (sunderu) — contraction of すんでいる

[PLACE] にすんでいます。

[place] ni sunde imasu.

→ "I live in [place]."

よこはまにすんでいます。

Yokohama ni sunde imasu.

I live in Yokohama.

～から～まで — From ~ to ~

から (kara) marks the starting point and まで (made) marks the ending point. They can be used for both time and place.

  • えきからいえまで = from the station to home
  • You can use から alone: えきからじゅっぷん = 10 minutes from the station
  • まで alone also works: えきまであるきます = I walk to the station

～ふん / ～じかん — Minutes / Hours

ふん (fun) counts minutes and じかん (jikan) counts hours. Watch out for sound changes:

  • いっぷん (1 min), にふん (2), さんぷん (3), よんぷん (4), ごふん (5)
  • ろっぷん (6), ななふん (7), はっぷん / はちふん (8), きゅうふん (9), じゅっぷん (10)
  • いちじかん (1 hr), にじかん (2 hrs), さんじかん (3 hrs)

～かい — Floor counter

かい (kai / gai) counts building floors. Watch the sound changes:

  • いっかい (1F), にかい (2F), さんがい (3F), よんかい (4F), ごかい (5F)
  • ろっかい (6F), ななかい (7F), はっかい (8F), きゅうかい (9F), じゅっかい (10F)
  • なんかい (what floor?) — note: さんがい has a voiced が

[number] kai ni sunde imasu.

→ "I live on the [number] floor."

マンションのさんがいにすんでいます。

Manshon no sangai ni sunde imasu.

I live on the third floor of a condo.

～があります / います — Existence (things / living beings)

あります (arimasu) is for inanimate objects and います (imasu) is for living beings.

  • こうえんがあります = there is a park
  • ねこがいます = there is a cat
  • Casual: ある (aru) / いる (iru)

[PLACE] に [THING] があります。

[place] ni [thing] ga arimasu.

→ "There is [thing] at [place]."

いえのちかくにこうえんがあります。

Ie no chikaku ni kōen ga arimasu.

There is a park near my house.

～くて (i-adj connective) / ～で (na-adj connective)

To connect two adjectives ("A and B"), the form depends on the adjective type:

  • い-adjective: drop い, add くて → ひろい → ひろくて (spacious and…)
  • な-adjective: add で → しずかな → しずかで (quiet and…)
  • Exception: いい → よくて (good and…)

→ "[adj 1] and [adj 2]"

～のちかくに — Near ~

ちかく (chikaku) means "vicinity" or "nearby". Use の to connect it to a noun, and に to mark the location.

  • いえのちかくに = near the house
  • えきのちかくに = near the station
  • がっこうのちかくに = near the school

[noun] no chikaku ni [thing] ga arimasu.

→ "There is [thing] near [noun]."

いえのちかくにこうえんがあります。
