Asking a price — いくらですか

STANDARD

[ITEM] はいくらですか？

[item] wa ikura desu ka?

→ "How much is [item]?" — standard polite question

CASUAL

これ、いくら？

Kore, ikura?

→ "How much is this?" — casual, drop です and か

Asking permission — ～てもいいですか

FORMAL

[VERB-て] もよろしいでしょうか？

[verb-te] mo yoroshii deshō ka?

→ "May I [verb]?" — keigo, very polite

STANDARD

[VERB-て] もいいですか？

[verb-te] mo ii desu ka?

→ "Is it OK if I [verb]?" — polite everyday form

Making a decision — ～にします

🟢 STANDARD

これにします。

Kore ni shimasu.

I'll take this one.

にします = "I'll decide on ~". Used when choosing an item to buy.

🟡 CASUAL

これにする。

Kore ni suru.

I'll go with this.

Drop ます for casual. Very common when shopping with friends.

Comparing — ～のほうがいい

🟢 STANDARD

Sサイズのほうがいいです。

S saizu no hō ga ii desu.

Size S is better.

～のほうが = "~ is more…". Add です for politeness.

🟡 CASUAL

Sサイズのほうがいいかも。

S saizu no hō ga ii kamo.

Maybe size S is better.

かも = "maybe" — softens the suggestion among friends.

この / その / あの — Demonstratives for pointing at items

Japanese uses three demonstratives based on distance from the speaker:

  • この (kono) — "this" — near the speaker
  • その (sono) — "that" — near the listener
  • あの (ano) — "that over there" — far from both

They always come before a noun: この + シャツ = this shirt.

[この/その/あの] + NOUN

[kono/sono/ano] + noun

→ "this/that/that (over there) [noun]"

あのくろいジャケットをみせてください。

Ano kuroi jaketto wo misete kudasai.

Please show me that black jacket over there.

～てもいいですか — Asking permission

To ask "May I do ~?", use the て-form of a verb + もいいですか.

• しちゃくする → しちゃくして + もいいですか？ = "May I try it on?"
• たべる → たべて + もいいですか？ = "May I eat?"

More polite: よろしいでしょうか replaces いいですか for keigo.

[VERB-て] もいいですか？

[verb-te] mo ii desu ka?

→ "Is it OK if I [verb]?"

しちゃくしてもいいですか？

Shichaku shite mo ii desu ka?

May I try it on?

～をみせてください — "Please show me ~"

みせる (miseru) means "to show". The て-form + ください makes a polite request.

• [item] をみせてください = "Please show me [item]"
• More formal: みせていただけますか？ = "Could you show me?"

[ITEM] をみせてください。

[item] wo misete kudasai.

→ "Please show me [item]."

そのくつをみせてください。

Sono kutsu wo misete kudasai.

Please show me those shoes.

い-adjective + すぎる — "Too ~"

To say something is "too [adjective]", drop the い from an い-adjective and add すぎる (sugiru).

  • おおきい → おおき + すぎる = too big
  • ちいさい → ちいさ + すぎる = too small
  • たかい → たか + すぎる = too expensive

Polite form: すぎます (sugimasu).

[ADJ stem] すぎます。

[adj stem] sugimasu.

→ "It's too [adj]."

このズボンはちょっとながすぎます。

Kono zubon wa chotto nagasugimasu.

These trousers are a bit too long.

～のほうが — Comparison ("~ is more…")

～のほうが (no hō ga) is used to say one thing is better/more than another.

• Sサイズのほうがいい = "Size S is better"
• あかいのほうがにあう = "The red one suits you more"

Often paired with いい (good) or an adjective.

[A] のほうが [ADJ]

[A] no hō ga [adj]

→ "[A] is more [adj]."

Sサイズのほうがいいかも。

S saizu no hō ga ii kamo.

Maybe size S is better.

～にします — Making a choice

にします (ni shimasu) means "I'll decide on ~" or "I'll take ~". Used when choosing from options.

• これにします = "I'll take this one"
• Casual: これにする = "I'll go with this"

Very useful when shopping, ordering food, or picking from a menu.

[ITEM] にします。

[item] ni shimasu.

→ "I'll go with [item]."

じゃあ、これにします。

Jā, kore ni shimasu.

OK, I'll take this one.

colour + の + noun — Describing with colours

Most colour words in Japanese are い-adjectives and go directly before nouns:

  • あかいスカート = red skirt
  • くろいジャケット = black jacket
  • しろい Tシャツ = white T-shirt

For な-adjective colours (ピンク, オレンジ), use の: ピンクのぼうし = pink hat.

[COLOUR-い] + NOUN

[colour-i] + noun

→ "[colour] [noun]" — い-adj colours attach directly

このあかいスカート、かわいくない？

Kono akai sukāto, kawaiku nai?

Isn't this red skirt cute?
