Asking where something is

ใฉใ“ (doko) = where. ใซ (ni) marks the location. ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ (arimasu) = exists (for objects).

  โ€ข Use ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ for things (not people/animals)
โ€ข The item goes before ใฏ (wa) as the topic
Very common in shops, stations, and buildings
[item] wa doko ni arimasu ka?

Tamago wa doko ni arimasu ka?
Where are the eggs?

๏ฝžใ‚’ใใ ใ•ใ„ โ€” Requesting items

ใใ ใ•ใ„ (kudasai) = "please give me". Place the item + counter before it.

โ€ข ใ‚’ (wo) marks the object you are requesting
โ€ข Add a counter between ใ‚’ and ใใ ใ•ใ„ for quantities
Polite and natural at shops, restaurants, and service counters
[ITEM] ใ‚’ [NUMBER] ใใ ใ•ใ„ใ€‚
[item] wo [number] kudasai.
Please give me [number] [item]."
Ringo wo mittsu kudasai.
Three apples, please.

Counters ๏ฝžใค and ๏ฝžใ“ โ€” Counting things

Japanese uses counters after numbers. The ๏ฝžใค counter (native Japanese) is the most versatile for general objects:

  โ€ข ใฒใจใค (1), ใตใŸใค (2), ใฟใฃใค (3), ใ‚ˆใฃใค (4), ใ„ใคใค (5)
  โ€ข ใ‚€ใฃใค (6), ใชใชใค (7), ใ‚„ใฃใค (8), ใ“ใ“ใฎใค (9), ใจใŠ (10)

The ๏ฝžใ“ counter (Chinese-origin) also works for small round objects: ใ„ใฃใ“, ใซใ“, ใ•ใ‚“ใ“โ€ฆ
[item] wo [hitotsu / futatsu / mittsuโ€ฆ]
โ†’ "[number] [item]" โ€” use ๏ฝžใค for general counting
Tamago wo muttsu kudasai.
Six eggs, please.

๏ฝžใˆใ‚“ โ€” Stating prices

ใˆใ‚“ (en) = yen. Attach it after a number to state prices.

  โ€ข Note the sound changes: ใ•ใ‚“ใณใ‚ƒใ (not ใ•ใ‚“ใฒใ‚ƒใ), ใ‚ใฃใดใ‚ƒใ (not ใ‚ใใฒใ‚ƒใ), ใฏใฃใดใ‚ƒใ (not ใฏใกใฒใ‚ƒใ)
[number] en desu.
It's [number] yen."
Happyaku-en desu.
It's 800 yen.

๏ฝžใฏใ„ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ‹ โ€” Asking if someone needs something

ใ„ใ‚Šใพใ™ (irimasu) = to need/require. Very common at checkout counters in Japan.

Do you need a bag?"
Do you need a receipt?"

Respond: ใฏใ„ใ€ใŠใญใŒใ„ใ—ใพใ™ (yes, please) or ใ„ใ„ใˆใ€ใ ใ„ใ˜ใ‚‡ใ†ใถใงใ™ (no, I'm fine).
[THING] ใฏ ใ„ใ‚Šใพใ™ใ‹๏ผŸ

Do you need [thing]?"

๏ฝžใŒใ‚„ใ™ใ„ / ใŸใ‹ใ„ โ€” Describing prices with ใ„-adjectives

ใ‚„ใ™ใ„ (yasui) = cheap, ใŸใ‹ใ„ (takai) = expensive. These are ใ„-adjectives and follow standard ใ„-adjective rules.

โ€ข STANDARD: ใ“ใฎ ใ•ใ‹ใชใฏ ใ‚„ใ™ใ„ใงใ™ (kono sakana wa yasui desu)
  โ€ข CASUAL: ใ“ใฎ ใ•ใ‹ใช ใ‚„ใ™ใ„ใญ (kono sakana yasui ne)

[ITEM] ใฏ [ใ‚„ใ™ใ„ / ใŸใ‹ใ„] ใงใ™ใ€‚
[item] wa [yasui / takai] desu.
Item] is cheap / expensive."
Kono sakana wa yasui desu ne.
This fish is cheap, isn't it?

๏ฝžใ‚’ใ‹ใ„ใพใ™ / ใ‹ใŠใ† โ€” Buying things

ใ‹ใ„ใพใ™ (kaimasu) = to buy (polite). ใ‹ใ† (kau) = to buy (plain).

  โ€ข STANDARD: ใซใใ‚’ ใ‹ใ„ใพใ™ (niku wo kaimasu) = I'll buy meat
  โ€ข CASUAL volitional: ใ‹ใŠใ† (kaou) = let's buy
โ€ข CASUAL question: ใ‹ใ†๏ผŸ (kau?) = shall we buy?

The volitional ๏ฝžใŠใ† form is made from the dictionary form: ใ‹ใ† โ†’ ใ‹ใŠใ†, ใŸในใ‚‹ โ†’ ใŸในใ‚ˆใ†.
[ITEM] ใ‚’ ใ‹ใŠใ†ใ€‚
