Ordering — ～をおねがいします

FORMAL

Deciding — ～にします

いたします = humble form of します. Used at fine dining.

Karē ni shimasu.

I'll go with the curry.

～にします = "I'll decide on ~". Most common ordering pattern.

Adding items — ～もおねがいします

STANDARD

[ITEM] もおねがいします。

[item] mo onegai shimasu.

"[Item] too, please." — も replaces を to add another item

Staff offers — ～はいかがですか

FORMAL

[ITEM] はいかがですか？

[item] wa ikaga desu ka?

"Would you like [item]?" — polite offer from staff

Paying — おかいけい / べつべつ

おかいけい = the bill/check. お is a polite prefix.

いらっしゃいませ — Welcome (set phrase)

いらっしゃいませ is a fixed greeting used by staff in shops and restaurants. It is the keigo (honorific) form of いらっしゃる (to come/be).

  • Customers do NOT reply — just enter quietly or nod
  • You will never use this phrase yourself unless you work in a shop
  • The っ (double consonant) is important: i-ra-sshai-ma-se

"Welcome!" — staff-only greeting, no reply needed

いらっしゃいませ。なんめいさまですか？

Irasshaimase. Nanmei-sama desu ka?

Welcome. How many guests?

なんめいさま — Counter for guests (honorific)

めい (名) is the formal counter for people. さま adds extra politeness. Staff use なんめいさまですか to ask "how many?"

  • いちめい (1), にめい (2), さんめい (3), よんめい (4)
  • Less formal: なんにんですか？(nan-nin desu ka?) — same meaning, less polite
  • Reply: ～めいです or ～にんです

ご～ — Honorific prefix

ご (御) is an honorific prefix added to certain nouns to show respect. It is used in formal/polite speech, especially by service staff.

  • ごちゅうもん = your order (ちゅうもん + ご)
  • ごいっしょ = together (with you) — polite
  • お is the other honorific prefix (おみず, おかいけい, おのみもの)
  • Rule of thumb: ご for on'yomi words, お for kun'yomi words

ご [NOUN]

go- [noun]

"Your honourable [noun]" — adds politeness/respect

Have you decided on your order?

～にします — Deciding on something

～にします means "I'll go with ~" or "I'll have ~". It expresses a decision you are making right now.

  • カレーにします = "I'll have the curry" (you just decided)
  • ～をおねがいします = also means "~ please" but doesn't emphasise the decision
  • Formal: ～にいたします (humble form)

[item] ni shimasu.

"I'll go with [item]." — expressing your decision

カレーにします。

Karē ni shimasu.

I'll have the curry.

～はいかがですか — Would you like ~?

いかが is the polite form of どう (how). Staff use ～はいかがですか to politely offer something.

  • おのみものはいかがですか？ = "Would you like a drink?"
  • デザートはいかがですか？ = "Would you like dessert?"
  • Reply yes: おねがいします / Reply no: けっこうです ("No thank you")

～もおねがいします — Also please

When adding another item to your order, replace を with も (also/too).

  • カレーをおねがいします = "Curry, please" (first item)
  • サラダもおねがいします = "A salad too, please" (additional item)
  • も always replaces the particle を — never use をも together

ごちそうさまでした — Thank you for the meal

ごちそうさまでした is a set phrase said after finishing a meal. It expresses gratitude for the food.

  • Always say this when leaving a restaurant — it is expected
  • Before eating: いただきます ("I humbly receive")
  • After eating: ごちそうさまでした ("It was a feast — thank you")
  • Staff will reply: ありがとうございました ("Thank you very much")

Gochisōsama deshita.

"Thank you for the meal." — always said when done eating

ごちそうさまでした。とてもおいしかったです。
