～をください — Requesting items

ください (kudasai) means "please give me". Place the item + を before it.

  • コーヒーをください = "Coffee, please"
  • を can be pronounced as "o" in natural speech
  • This is the most common way to order at any café or restaurant

→ "[Item], please."

ホットコーヒーをひとつと、ケーキをください。

Hotto koohii wo hitotsu to, keeki wo kudasai.

～をおねがいします — Polite requests

おねがいします (onegai shimasu) is a softer, slightly more polite alternative to ください. Both are standard and correct for ordering.

  • Keigo upgrade: おねがいいたします (onegai itashimasu)
  • Casual shortcut: おねがい (onegai) — drop します
  • Works for any request, not just food orders

[ITEM] をおねがいします。

[item] wo onegai shimasu.

→ "[Item], please." — polite request

テイクアウトでおねがいします。

Teikuauto de onegai shimasu.

Aですか、Bですか — A or B questions

To offer a choice between two options, say each option followed by ですか, separated by a comma.

  • ホットですか、アイスですか？ = "Hot or iced?"
  • サイズは Sですか、Mですか？ = "Is the size S or M?"
  • Answer by stating your choice + でおねがいします

[A] ですか、 [B] ですか？

[A] desu ka, [B] desu ka?

→ "[A] or [B]?"

ホットですか、アイスですか？

～にします — Deciding / choosing

にします (ni shimasu) means "I'll go with ~" or "I'll decide on ~". It signals your choice.

  • STANDARD: ～にします (ni shimasu)
  • CASUAL: ～にする (ni suru)
  • Very natural at restaurants: これにします = "I'll have this"

[ITEM] にします。

[item] ni shimasu.

→ "I'll go with [item]." / "I'll have [item]."

おれはアイスコーヒーにする。

Ore wa aisu koohii ni suru.

I'll go with iced coffee.

Counter ～つ — Counting general items

～つ is the native Japanese counter for general objects. Used when ordering quantities at a café.

  • ひとつ (1), ふたつ (2), みっつ (3), よっつ (4), いつつ (5)
  • Place after the item + を: コーヒーをふたつ = "two coffees"
  • と (to) links multiple items: ～をひとつと、～をひとつ

[ITEM] を [NUMBER]つください。

[item] wo [number]-tsu kudasai.

→ "[Number] [item], please."

ケーキをふたつください。

Keeki wo futatsu kudasai.

Two cakes, please.

～えん — Yen amounts

えん (en) is the counter for Japanese currency. Attach it to numbers for prices.

  • ひゃくえん = 100 yen, にひゃくえん = 200 yen
  • Sound changes: さんびゃく (300), ろっぴゃく (600), はっぴゃく (800)
  • ぜんぶで～えんです = "It's ~ yen in total"

ぜんぶで [NUMBER] えんです。

zenbu de [number] en desu.

→ "It's [number] yen in total."

ぜんぶでろっぴゃくえんです。

Zenbu de roppyaku en desu.

It's 600 yen in total.
