Stating your occupation — ～をしています

FORMAL

[JOB] をしております。

[job] wo shite orimasu.

→ "I work as [job]." (humble/formal)

STANDARD

[JOB] をしています。

[job] wo shite imasu.

→ "I work as [job]." (polite)

CASUAL

[JOB] してるよ。

[job] shiteru yo.

→ "I do [job]." (casual)

Saying where you work — ～ではたらいています

🟢 STANDARD

びょういんではたらいています。

Byōin de hataraite imasu.

I work at a hospital.

[PLACE] + で + はたらいています。で marks the location of the action.

🟡 CASUAL

びょういんではたらいてるよ。

Byōin de hataraiteru yo.

I work at a hospital.

Contracted ている → てる. Add よ for casual assertion.

Asking about studies — なにをべんきょうしていますか？

🟢 STANDARD

なにをべんきょうしていますか？

Nani wo benkyou shite imasu ka?

What are you studying?

なに (what) + を + べんきょうしています + か (question)

🟡 CASUAL

なにべんきょうしてるの？

Nani benkyou shiteru no?

What are you studying?

Drop を, contract ている → てる, use の? for casual question.

Expressing a future goal — ～になりたいです

STANDARD

[GOAL] になりたいです。

[goal] ni naritai desu.

→ "I want to become [goal]."

CASUAL

[GOAL] になりたい。

[goal] ni naritai.

→ "I wanna be [goal]." — drop です for casual.

～をしています — Ongoing occupation

Use ～をしています to describe your current job or role. This pattern treats the occupation as an ongoing activity (～ている form of する).

  • せんせいをしています = I work as a teacher
  • エンジニアをしています = I work as an engineer
  • Formal humble: しております (shite orimasu)

[JOB] をしています。

[job] wo shite imasu.

→ "I work as [job]." — describes your current occupation

えいごのせんせいをしています。

Eigo no sensei wo shite imasu.

I work as an English teacher.

～にかよっています — Commuting / attending

かよう means "to commute to" or "to attend regularly." The ～ている form shows an ongoing habit of going there.

  • だいがくにかよっています = I attend university
  • えきまであるいてかよっています = I walk to the station to commute
  • The double っ is important: かよっています (kayotte imasu)

[PLACE] にかよっています。

[place] ni kayotte imasu.

→ "I attend / commute to [place]."

だいがくにかよっています。

Daigaku ni kayotte imasu.

I attend university.

～ではたらいています — Working at a place

で marks the location where the work happens. Combined with はたらいています (working — ている form), it states where you work.

  • びょういんではたらいています = I work at a hospital
  • がっこうではたらいています = I work at a school
  • で ≠ に here: で = location of action, に = destination

[PLACE] ではたらいています。

[place] de hataraite imasu.

→ "I work at [place]."

がっこうではたらいています。

Gakkō de hataraite imasu.

I work at a school.

～をべんきょうしています — Studying a subject

べんきょうする is "to study." The ～ている form shows ongoing study. を marks the subject being studied.

  • けいざいをべんきょうしています = I'm studying economics
  • にほんごをべんきょうしています = I'm studying Japanese
  • Formal humble: べんきょうしております

[SUBJECT] をべんきょうしています。

[subject] wo benkyou shite imasu.

→ "I am studying [subject]."

けいざいをべんきょうしています。

Keizai wo benkyou shite imasu.

I am studying economics.

～ねんせい — School year

ねんせい (nensei) is the counter for school years / grades. Attach it after the number.

  • いちねんせい = 1st year   • にねんせい = 2nd year
  • さんねんせい = 3rd year   • よねんせい = 4th year
  • Used for all levels: しょうがくせい (elementary), ちゅうがくせい (junior high), こうこうせい (high school), だいがくせい (university)

[NUMBER] ねんせいです。

[number] nensei desu.

→ "I am in [number] year."

だいがくにねんせいです。

Daigaku ni-nensei desu.

I am a second-year university student.

～になりたいです — Want to become

なる (naru) means "to become." The ～たい form expresses desire. に marks what you want to become.

  • せんせいになりたいです = I want to become a teacher
  • いしゃになりたいです = I want to become a doctor
  • Casual: なりたい (drop です)   • Confirming: なりたいんでしょ？ (you want to, right?)

[GOAL] になりたいです。

[goal] ni naritai desu.

→ "I want to become [goal]."

しょうらいいしゃになりたいです。

Shōrai isha ni naritai desu.

I want to become a doctor in the future.
