→ もうします is the humble (けんじょうご) form of いいます — used when speaking about yourself to show deference to the listener.

→ から = "from" (origin). に = "in" (location). すんでいます = te-iru form expressing an ongoing state.

1 · Introduce yourself

FORMAL

わたくしは[NAME]ともうします。

Watakushi wa [name] to moushimasu.

→ "My name is [NAME]." — humble speech; use in business meetings, formal presentations.

STANDARD

わたしは[NAME]です。

Watashi wa [name] desu.

→ "I am [NAME]." — reliable in almost every situation; pair with はじめまして.

CASUAL

[NAME]だよ。よろしく！

[name] da yo. Yoroshiku!

→ "I'm [NAME]. Nice to meet you!" — だよ adds friendly confidence; よろしく is the casual form.

2 · Say where you're from

FORMAL

[COUNTRY]からまいりました。

[country] kara mairimashita.

→ "I have come from [COUNTRY]." — まいりました is the humble form of きました.

STANDARD

[COUNTRY]からきました。

[country] kara kimashita.

→ "I came from [COUNTRY]." — から = from; past tense of くる.

CASUAL

[place] shusshin da yo.

→ "I'm from [PLACE]." — 出身 means "originally from"; more natural in casual speech than からきた.

3 · Say where you live

STANDARD

[CITY]にすんでいます。

[city] ni sunde imasu.

→ "I live in [CITY]." — に marks location; すんでいます = te-iru form expressing an ongoing state of living.

CASUAL

[CITY]にすんでる。

[city] ni sunden.

→ "I live in [CITY]." — すんでいる contracts to すんでる in casual speech; very natural.

4 · Share your job and age

STANDARD

しごとは[JOB]です。　～さいです。

Shigoto wa [job] desu. [number]-sai desu.

→ "My job is [JOB]." / "I am [X] years old." — simple [TOPIC] は [INFO] です pattern.

CASUAL

[JOB]だよ。　[NUMBER]さいだよ。

[job] da yo. [number]-sai da yo.

→ "I'm a [JOB]." / "I'm [X]." — だよ replaces です in casual speech.

わたし · わたくし · ぼく — Levels of "I"

Japanese has multiple first-person pronouns, each carrying a different formality level:
• わたくし (watakushi) — most formal; used in business, official speeches, humble contexts.
• わたし (watashi) — neutral; safe in any situation; the default for learners.
• ぼく (boku) — informal; typically used by males; friendly but not feminine.
• おれ (ore) — rough/casual; male; avoid until you know the situation well.
When in doubt, use わたし.

【ビジネス】わたくしはやまだともうします。
【ふつう】わたしはやまだです。
【くだけた】ぼく、やまだ。

[Business] Watakushi wa Yamada to moushimasu. [Standard] Watashi wa Yamada desu. [Casual] Boku, Yamada.

My name is Yamada — at three levels of formality.

～からきました — "I came from ~" (origin)

から means "from" (starting point). Combined with きました (past tense of くる, to come), it states your country or city of origin.
• [COUNTRY] からきました — I came from [COUNTRY].
• [CITY] の [COUNTRY] からきました — I came from [CITY] in [COUNTRY].
Formal upgrade: きました → まいりました (humble form of くる).

[CITY] の [COUNTRY] からきました。

[city] no [country] kara kimashita.

→ "I came from [CITY] in [COUNTRY]." — の connects city to country like "of."

オーストラリアのシドニーからきました。

Oosutoraria no Shidonii kara kimashita.

I came from Sydney, Australia.

～にすんでいます — "I live in ~" (te-iru for ongoing state)

すむ (to live / to reside) in the て-form + います expresses a continuous, ongoing state — the fact that you currently live somewhere.
• に marks the location: とうきょうにすんでいます.
• In casual speech, すんでいます contracts to すんでる.
This te-iru pattern applies to many verbs describing ongoing states: けっこんしています (I'm married), はたらいています (I'm working), べんきょうしています (I'm studying).

いまおおさかにすんでいます。まえはとうきょうにすんでいました。

Ima Oosaka ni sunde imasu. Mae wa Toukyou ni sunde imashita.

I live in Osaka now. I used to live in Tokyo.

～ともうします — Humble self-introduction

もうす (mousu) is the humble (けんじょうご) form of いう (to say / to be called). When you say わたくしは [NAME]ともうします, you are using humble language to lower yourself and show respect to the listener.
The particle と here is the quotation particle — "I am called [NAME]."
At a more relaxed level, simply use: わたしは [NAME]です.

My name is Yamada — humble vs. standard.

出身 (shusshin) — "Originally from"

出身 (shusshin) means "place of origin / hometown." It is a noun used directly after a place name:
• とうきょう出身です — I'm from Tokyo (originally).
• どこ出身ですか？ — Where are you from originally?
It implies where you grew up or were born, which can differ from where you currently live. Often more natural than からきました in conversation.

A: どこ出身ですか？　B: にほんのきょうと出身です。いまはおおさかにすんでいます。

A: Doko shusshin desu ka? B: Nihon no Kyouto shusshin desu. Ima wa Oosaka ni sunde imasu.

A: Where are you from originally? B: I'm from Kyoto, Japan. I live in Osaka now.

～さい — Age counter

さい (sai / 歳) is the counter for years of age. Attach it directly to the number:
• いっさい (1) · にさい (2) · さんさい (3) · よんさい (4) · ごさい (5)
• じゅっさい (10) · じゅうごさい (15) · にじゅっさい (20) · さんじゅっさい (30)
Ask age with なんさいですか？ (standard) or おいくつですか？ (polite). Avoid asking a superior's age directly — it can be considered rude.

A: おいくつですか？　B: にじゅうはっさいです。まだわかいですよ！

A: Oikutsu desu ka? B: Nijuuhassai desu. Mada wakai desu yo!

A: How old are you? B: I'm 28. Still young!
